How to Secure Your Canopy Tent on Concrete
On concrete, plan for a ballast system that is compatible with your canopy and permitted by the venue. Confirm the attachment method and required weight for your tent before the event. MVP does not have one universal ballast specification for every canopy and setup.
Confirm the anchoring requirements before you arrive
Stakes driven into soil are not an option on a concrete surface. Check the instructions for your tent and speak with the venue about its approved anchoring methods before deciding what to bring.
- Identify your tent. Have the model, size and planned accessories available when checking the requirements. Include any sidewalls, signs or other attachments you intend to use.
- Ask the venue. Confirm its ballast requirements, permitted equipment and any restrictions on attachment or placement.
- Check your equipment. Confirm that the ballast and its fasteners are intended for your frame. A heavy object beside a leg is not a substitute for a specified attachment method.
- Plan transport and filling. Find out whether you can fill and empty bags at the venue, and how you will move the filled equipment into position.

Compare filling, transport and fitting requirements, then check your chosen equipment against the instructions for your tent.
Water-filled weights
Water-filled weights can travel empty and be filled at the event, reducing what you need to carry on the journey. Check that water is available where you will set up, that the container is designed to hold water, and that the venue permits filling and emptying it there.
Confirm the filled capacity and attachment instructions for the exact product. Do not assume that one bag per leg meets the tent's or venue's requirements.
Sand-filled bags
Sand-filled bags can also travel empty if suitable fill is available at the venue. Otherwise, account for the filled weight during loading, transport and unloading. Plan how to contain and transport the sand after the event.
Use bags and fasteners intended for the anchoring system specified for your tent. A bag's appearance or approximate size does not establish its filled weight or compatibility.
Purpose-made weight plates
Plates avoid the need to find fill material at the venue, but their weight travels with you. Check their dimensions and how they fit or attach to the tent before ordering or packing them. Different plate designs use different attachment arrangements.
For larger or semi-permanent structures, get the specified ballast and installation plan from the supplier. Do not substitute loose concrete blocks or a homemade assembly for that plan.
How much weight does a canopy need on concrete?
There is no single MVP-approved number that applies to every tent, site and configuration. Use the requirements for your exact canopy and anchoring system, and check the venue's requirements as well.
A bag's filled capacity describes the bag; it does not prove that one bag provides enough ballast for your tent. Likewise, the number of bags in a retail set is not an anchoring specification.

Check attachment and placement
Follow the attachment points, fasteners and positioning specified for your tent and ballast system. Do not replace them with a generic rope, bungee cord, improvised eyebolt or a homemade weight recipe.
Plan where the weights and connections will sit in relation to customer walkways and the working space beneath the tent. Check the venue's layout requirements before setting up rather than discovering an obstruction after the display is assembled.

Use the operating limits for your tent
Follow the tent's instructions and the venue's procedures for changing weather and taking the canopy down. Adding more bags is not permission to use a tent beyond its operating limits.
