With the rapidly-changing situation and guidelines surrounding the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, it can be tricky to make sure you're up-to-date on the latest recommendations to keep yourself, and others, protected.
As many across the country head back to work, many places of employment are requiring staff (and customers, in some cases) to wear face masks or coverings. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) under the U.S. Department of Labor has published some quick tips about the differences between PPE (personal protective equipment) such as surgical masks, versus home-made or store-bought cloth face coverings, like the ones we offer here at MVP. Both can help mitigate the spread of the COVID-19 virus to others in close quarters, but it's important to know their differences before deciding what's right for you.
Surgical Masks
- Can help reduce the transmission of the COVID-19 virus
- Usually cleared the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) as medical devices
- Can protect workers against splashes and sprays containing potentially infectious materials
- Can also prevent infected people from spreading respiratory droplets
- Offer less protection than tighter, sealed coverings (like an N95 respirator mask)
- May be used by almost everyone
Cloth Face Coverings
- Can help reduce the transmission of the COVID-19 virus
- May be professionally made, or home-made
- Typically includes scarves, bandanas, or other fabric masks
- Must cover the nose and mouth to be effective
- Are not considered PPE (personal protective equipment)
- Offer less protection than tighter, sealed coverings (like an N95 respirator mask)
- May be used by almost everyone
- Can be disposed of, or re-used after proper washing
