Mom and Pop Shops: How To Attract Foot Traffic
by Olivia Rose on November 29, 2013
You can attract foot traffic by building your store in a pedestrian-heavy area and by designing the exterior to be as alluring as possible. You might even hire expert designers to help you create an inviting storefront. For example, a well-lit exterior with a sizable window displaying your wares invites passersby to step in. But if you already have a location and don’t have a budget for a full remodeling, you still have some options for driving foot traffic into your retail store.
Research local foot traffic to determine what types of pedestrians pass by your store. Sit outside your business and record data about passersby, such as age, whether they window shop, what direction they come from and other factors relevant to your type of retail store. Collect data at different times of day to develop a comprehensive understanding of local foot traffic.
Identify the demographics you wish to target so you can design a suitable marketing campaign to draw them in. For example, if you wish to target senior citizens, and your research indicates they tend to pass your store mid-morning, your marketing efforts must take these factors into account.
Create a marketing campaign to draw attention, keeping in mind what is likely to work for your target demographic. Marketing efforts might include hiring someone to hand out coupons to passersby at suitable times of the day, hanging bright signs to notify pedestrians of ongoing sales and staging sidewalk sales to attract attention to your product line.
Join with other local businesses to throw a block party. Participants can offer their wares on the street at a discount. Even if you don’t make much money from that day’s sales, you’ll build brand awareness and attract pedestrians who otherwise might not visit the area.
Use location-based Internet and mobile phone services to promote your store to nearby pedestrians. For example, post store location, hours, and special coupons or discounts to catch the attention of passing pedestrians. Not only might this increase sales, but the new customers you attract might post favorable reviews, enhancing your reputation on social network websites and bringing in more customers.
